IMO the world needed a depression to squeeze overcapacity out of the world economic system. See Sid Turtleman's posts on the Big Picture thread.

I agree. The big caps do attract most of the attention (and money), and the perpetuum mobile of index funds beating the funds average, attracting more investors and keeping the big caps ahead again, is a much discussed issue. I think it began when every investor wanted to imitate Warren Buffett's investment style, just 2-3 years ago.
