Well... heres something interesting for you on conservative vs. liberal agendas. In San Francisco they still had busing for a long time (apparently for a number of reasons some of which were an imbalance in school population, some schools were too full and some empty - theres no space left to build so some kids had to be bussed). There is a conservative group that has been against busing and any relocation of kids for a long time despite the logistics issues which no one has a solution for. At the same time, busing was used to redistribute the races among the different schools so each school had an even mix. Lowell is the best high school in SF. In the last month the racial quota system has been defeated - I think it is an extension of the same thing that outlawed the quotas at Berkeley. The result is, with no more quotas, Lowell is accepting the top academic contendors - which turn out to be vast majority asian, very few whites and even fewer blacks.

The conservative group has changed sides and is now in favor of a quota system again! Ha Ha - except this time their argement is that the kids that go to Lowell should have to live near Lowell.

My point is that very few radical groups do anything on principal, they are mostly just trying to improve their own condition. The minute the conservatives start seeing themselves in the minority they change their stripes immediately... its easy to have a "no handouts" attitude when you are at the top of the economic ladder.

BTW I am a fiscal conservative and dont believe in entitlements either but when it comes to the truly disadvantaged, I think we should treat them better than we do in this very wealthy country.
