Marty, all,
Fujitsu working on some far out things, quantum dots, or "quan-tum-dot wavelength-multiplexed memory": nni.nikkei.co.jp

excerpt:

<<Fujitsu Ltd. said it has developed a new type of memory that uses light
of different wavelengths to store massive amounts of information within
extremely small spaces in a semiconductor material.

The company is still at the basic stage of development and so far has
verified only the ability to write data with two different light signals.
However, it said the technology has the potential to store data at a density
of some 1.1 trillion bits per square inch. At that capacity, a memory
device no bigger than a postage stamp could hold the equivalent of 200 movies.

Fujitsu calls the new device "quan-tum-dot wavelength-multiplexed memory." The company developed
the technology as part of a program sponsored by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The
company has filed for patents on the device in Japan, the U.S., Germany, France and South Korea.

It aims to have a practical system ready by 2005.>>
