This is called "tax simplification", and it means that most conservatives do not, in fact, favor the use of the tax code for social engineering, certainly not in the long run.

I agree that there are some conservatives such as Steve Forbes that want tax simplification and no social engineering. But the "values" constituent of the republicans (Christian Coalition et al) are quite in favor of social engineering - repealing the "marriage penalty" is an example of that. I hate to tell you this but repealing the marriage penalty is actually a tax credit for people that adhere to the standard of marriage. Gays are not eligible for this "credit" either. 2 individuals should pay the exact same tax as a married couple in my mind. Dan Quayle is an example of someone in favor of social engineering using the tax code.
