London--Feb 17--The western-world lead market recorded a supply-demand
surplus of 34,000 tonnes last year, while the zinc market saw an 87,000-
tonne deficit, according to preliminary figures from the International Lead
and Zinc Study Group. The figures compare with a 1997 western-world lead
deficit of 6,000 tonnes and a zinc deficit of 33,000 tonnes. By Miranda

London--Feb 16--European zinc smelters are still seeking 1999 concentrate
treatment charge terms at US $5 to $10 a tonne above levels sought by zinc
miners, sources in Europe said this week. While sporadic spot deals were
said to have been struck, they were too small and individual in nature to
be used as benchmark settlements, sources said. By Miranda Maxwell, Bridge

Tokyo--Feb 17--Japan's Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. announced today it
has raised its domestic sales price of refined zinc by 5,000 yen to 161,000
yen per tonne, effective immediately. The monthly average price of refined
zinc now stands at 157,100 yen for February. Bridge News, Story .2021

New York--Feb 16--German zinc smelter Metallgesellschaft and Canadian zinc
mining company Noranda have settled treatment charges, a MG source
confirmed today, saying that the deal was made for 1999 and 2000
concentrate shipments. While industry sources have suggested the treatment
charge was at a level of $167-170 basis $1,000 per tonne, both parties
refused to reveal the specifics of the deal, saying that they had agreed
not to disclose it to the market. By Melanie Lovatt and Darcy Keith, Bridge

I just had a chance to really study the chart on BWR and all I can say is this one looks set to make an upside breakout. The accumulation since it bottomed in mid 98 has been nothing short of a classic technical analysis 101 picture and things appear ready to rock and roll within the short-term.
