The reason you got better execution is probably that the order was represented as a spread on the floor by a broker It's represented as a spread because Schwab allows you to input both sides as a spread. Most e-brokers don't allow this because they have to pay a floor broker to represent the trade (if it's a spread), which is much more expensive than electronic execution. The exchanges don't allow electronic inputting of spread orders. However, Schwab does not have market maker (no retail brokers do - illegal), but they may have there own floor broker which is an advantage.
