ntel to introduce 550mhz Pentium III
processors next week

By Molly Williams
BLOOMBERG NEWS

SANTA CLARA — Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, said it will
unveil a 550 megahertz version of its new Pentium III processor next week
and plans to spend $300 million to promote the Pentium III line.

Intel was expected to unveil 450MHz and 500MHz versions of the new
chip Feb. 26. Intel's fastest chips today run at 450MHz and cost as much
as $3,692.

Intel Chief Executive Craig Barrett made the announcement at the
company's Pentium III preview day in San Jose, California, where software
and computer makers are showing off new applications that take advantage
of the Pentium III's speed and advanced multimedia capabilities. Intel said
this was the biggest product kickoff it's ever held.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel is pushing the transition to the new,
faster and more powerful Pentium III, which includes added instructions
that make video and graphics better.

Intel, whose chips run about 85 percent of the world's PCs, hopes to
provide more reasons for people to buy new PCs and boost demand. PC
sales growth has slowed in the past two years as more than half of
households have PCs and people don't see reasons to buy new ones.

The Pentium III chip ultimately will replace the company's Pentium II
processors, and future Pentium III Xeon chips will replace the existing
Pentium II Xeon processors.

Intel shares fell 1/2 to 125 7/8 in midafternoon trading.

Besides Intel, I wonder if they also use Apple, Cyrix and AMD chips.
