>>Which to me negates the cost advantage of the (*Flop!) media. Hopefully, for IOM's sake, I'm missing something here.<<

Nope, you hit the nail on the head.

And what's more, is that it is exactly what I've been telling you Iomaniacs about all along...that Iomega gave up on the "Zip caddy" a long time ago.

Do yourself a favor, and sit down and just think for awhile. Think of where the PDA/Digicam market is going. Think of all of the brand new cameras with CompactFlash and Smartmedia shipping-- even though the opportunity to integrate Iomega Flop drives have been around for a long time now. You will realize that Flop! is being left out in the cold for a reason.

>If this means that they've given up on the zip caddy to make clik! zip-compatible, then I think that this was a very bad decision and will come back to haunt them.<

Please note that the rotary actuator is the same mechanism used for the 250 MB Zip. That is the point of compatibility....

It's Official- Nikon will Not Use Iomega Flop!

The FAQ at Nikon's website:

nikonusa.com
Disk drive-based cameras do not pass Nikon reliability standards for field operation in hostile environments.

This seemingly kills any chance at all of Nikon ever using Flop! Also, IBM's TinyDrive is out. Flop!'s disk-drive based design seems to be scaring off potential OEM's. And I don't blame them. Who wants to pay for costly warranty repairs for the whole camera when just the disk drive craps out?

Safe, reliable, efficient CompactFlash is for Nikon. It's for me too.

rll, many new PCs have USB connectors now. My Compaq has two right
in front, intended for temporary attachment of cameras etc.
Wouldn't a USB Click! fit in with this?

[as many of you know, USB devices can be hot-plugged and
require no installation by the user].

>>If this means that they've given up on the zip caddy to make clik! zip-compatible, then I think that this was a very bad decision and will come back to haunt them. Now it will require some type of cable or wireless technique to get the data to a pc from a clik! built-in device.<<

RLL -

Don't forget that most people already use a cable to get the pictures from their cameras to the PC. But they have to do that after taking a very few pictures, due to the capacity limits of flash cards.

As USB and IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interfaces become common on both PCs and cameras, the transfers will become quicker and easier.

A Zip caddy setup would have been nice, but the lack of one is not going to kill the Clik! I'd like to see the camera makers adopt a docking cradle like that of the PalmPilot.
