John, >>>It looks as if both corporations and consumers will soon be able to buy a sub 1k Dell computer.<<<

I don't really think you understand what this Intel segmentation strategy is all about.

For some people and businesses (just like for some women - who could never be beautiful, rich, or thin enough), they could never (I mean never) have a processor that is reliable eough or fast enough. There are always compatibility issues and response time is effected. For now, 2 or 3 sec differences are huge. later on .2 or .3 secs will seem just as huge.

As things become more competitive, people will always pay more for memory, DASD, faster processing, better distribution of I/O devices to get or keep an edge. That is hardly ever going to change. In the same way there are always those that are going to get you a better deal to save you another 25 cents - that is always never going to change. The segmentation strategy recognises these constants, and everything in between, and address it.

Regards,

Mary
