<<. So why should everyone run out and replace their old boxes a year or eighteen months before they have to? Better to wait and get'em cheaper.>>

Some recent surveys have uncovered precisely this problem to the upgrade issue. Upgrading is driven by software bloat/new features. However, if one does not upgrade software or purchase the latest polygon-glutted games, then the machines are serviceable for some time (especially if they were purchased with Internet access in mind).

Two years ago, a reasonable system was a P166 with a 56k modem, 2gb HD and 32MB RAM. That is still a decent machine and will continue to run Quicken, IE4.0, SimCity 2000, and even office 95 (or works 4.0).

I wonder about the masses in this matter. Their frame of reference is a TV purchase and one keeps a TV until the tube doesn't work or some improvement proves to be highly attractive for the price. Will they upgrade like audiophiles or like TV owners?

Nadine, Because running your business is too important to wait until the last minute. Buying boxes is only part of the problem. Then you have to install them, teach your folks now to use the new software, etc. If you have a real business, you do not buy at the stroke of Midnight before you turn into a pumpkin. <g> And the lower ASPs speak of the fact that there is certainly no rush to buy now.
