>>Personally I believe charity and compassion for others are two of the traits that separate "good" people from "bad" people. It makes me feel good to be able to do for others that are in need.<< Of course it does. Kind of makes you feel like a Lord back in medieval times, doesn't it? Riding along on your horse, wearing your fine coat and tossing coins to the peasant children; handing out a kind word to their parents and maybe even letting them touch your sleeve -- what a nice, warm, fuzzy, superior feeling. A little bit like playing God, isn't it? You can choose those peasants whom you feel are most deserving, and ignore those who maybe aren't so pleasant to look at (always more fun to give to a pretty young peasant girl than to her arthritic grandmother!) or who don't till your fields quickly enough because of some character weakness that they could overcome if they just had the balls you have. >>At the same time, to be bound by law to give my hard earned monies to a bloated, inefficient, wasteful, government hand out program has very little to do with charity or compassion.<< You're right -- it's hard to get that warm, fuzzy feeling when you don't know to whom your money is going; hard when you don't get to pass it out yourself so that the peasants can gaze worshipfully at you -- hardest when you no one even acknowledges your contribution because yours is just one among many, and compulsory (and thus not evidence of what a fine fellow you are). But you see, most people are mean-spirited, selfish and greedy, and would not be as willing to "do for the needy" as you are. Which means, of course, that without those "government hand-out programs" some people would starve, or freeze to death, or die of easily treated illnesses. But they're just lazy, right? So it's their own fault if they starve, or freeze, or die of a simple illness -- right? Hey, here's an idea -- maybe we should just line up all those lazy sons-of-bitches and shoot them! That'd save a bundle for hardworking taxpayers for yourself, wouldn't it! And we could even save on burial costs by throwing them all into one mass grave. Isn't that a great idea? Rose
