There is an out for Iridium, I think, that doesn't require us to think in terms of Iridium failure/Globalstar success; Iridium must simply sell the bulk of its service to governments, who will find it cheaper to have global communications via Iridium than to build it themselves. Then Iridium can get by with, say, 100,000 total private users, while the government users pay for the system.

Then Globalstar can sell its service to private individuals, at least until AT&T world service trumps that card. Then it's back to square one.

Maybe the guys who said wireless build-out would kill satcom were right. After all, who could see 10 years ago how huge internet would be? So the satcom designers of 1987 were thinking how smart they were, and now we're saying how stupid they are. Sheesh....

Maurice: Regarding the possibility of a lot of worthless space junk being created by LEO systems that never fulfill their promise, I am moved to think of a new industry that might be profitable: LEO garbage disposal.

I actually feel very bad for I* but also I think the market will think the same of G* as well. It is going to now be very difficult to persuad the market to give G* a good rating. They will wiat till there are real earnings!!!!
