>I have a real problem with Yahoo as a gorilla. One of the criteria's for gorilla status (I
believe), is high barriers to entry. I don't know about you, but it seems like everyone
and their mother is setting up 'portal' sites these days.<

Kevin, I neglected to do my homework on what a gorilla really is before I posted. There is however a difference in what Yahoo's and other new portals content is. As Yahoo locks up deals with the best on the web it shuts others out.

>Another criteria for gorilla status is high customer switching costs. Again, I look at my
own use of YHOO...If I don't find what I am looking for on Yahoo, I'll go to Lycos, or
the Mining CO., or Excite, etc. You are always just one click away from the
competition.<

The switching cost is time. People want to go to one site for everything. It seems like whenever something new pops up on the web Yahoo is there with its own version.

If I may,

based on this information, ATHM is a potential gorilla because of high barriers to entry... ? and high cost of switching over (as in none).

I have my new cable connection and apart from xdsl at $ 65/month, this service by my monopolistic cable company is the ONLY game in town, at $ 40/month to boot.

have I got it right ?

Take care
Jean
