Hi Bernard, Steve, All,

>I think his earlier thesis that local loop architectures for cable/DSL/wireless would converge is correct.<

Don't tell anyone on either the Last Mile or ATHM thread that I said so (forsooth!), but my current liaison with FTTH is only a ruse. In actuality, it's an initial negotiating position for the same end-game goals I stated previously. As if you didn't know.

This should not rule out, however, the use of fiber to the home in all instances. It is my belief that fiber will find its way to the structure, increasingly, when plastic snap-on connectorization and polymeric fiber becomes spectrum-robust and cost-effective enough.

It's an interesting discussion piece, in any event, and paints an ideal set of circumstances. By overstating the reach requirements of the fiber directly onto the side of the house and into the den, I may be able to back off a bit at some point and get it to within shooting distance, i.e., the pedestal. Instead of a major neighborhood node location serving 5,000 users or even 500 users.

Then, one of the other techs you mentioned can take over and deliver the payload. <s>

Regards, Frank Coluccio

Mr. Levy

Thanks for your reply to my post of 1/24 and for your further comments.

Also thanks to others who contributed their informed viewpoints. It is all very helpful, especially for a novice investor like myself. I don't know of any other place on the web where I can get this quality of discussion.

Mr. Coluccio mentions fiber to the pedestal (FTTC?) and another tech from there to the structure. Could ethernet be one of these?

<...Thanks for recalling my positive views on VDSL...>

Hi Bernard-

To be honest, I was more interested in the generic DSL aspect to this BRCM related press. As you know, FTTN will present very costly (in a number of parameters) impediments for the telcos.

<..It's funny that BRCM and TXN are using ISSCC as a backdrop for their battle on QAM versus synchronized DMT for the T1E1 VDSL standard...>

According to some engineers who attended, most of the conference was largely rehash. And there are a lot of standards players in T1E1 for VDSL. From what I hear, I'd be surprised if QAM was involved in any final drafts.

<..Of course, each company is trying to put its best foot forward (BRCM by its emphasis on pure DSP implementations, and TXN with the use of an analog front end)...>

Incremental advances notwithstanding, all DSP solutions have the nagging constraints of price, size, and power/heat. OTOH, I wonder if MOT has suspended their attempt at a single chip ASIC.

<..By the way, although Frank C. on the Last Mile thread seems currently enamored with FTTH..>

Haven't found time to read "Last Mile" for many months, but I respect Frank's opinions. Still, I'm a bit baffled if that "enamoration" had expectations of widespread buildout within the next 8-10 years.

<..I think his earlier thesis that local loop architectures for cable/DSL/wireless would converge is correct. Within this context, because it involves short distances, and offers a very high dedicated capacity, VDSL will be a powerful contender...>

So do you see FDM techniques in wireless radios, or do you see VDSL eventually involving QAMx?

<..The ISSCC had a lot of other good discussions (look at the software
versus hardware debate, and the Klaas Bult talk on the effect of
scaling on analog A/Ds)..>

Did you attend? Any highlights/insights to share?

Regards-

Steve
