Memroy Stick does NOT fit into a CF slot.
None of these standards fit into each other's slots. The Sony memory Stick is like a Smartmedia card, needing onboard drivers to use.

Here's the big concept I hope you all realize:
What drivers for external Flash memory are loaded into MS Windows, all versions, Win 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98. and 2000 along with NT and CE?

Answer: ATA devices! ==> CompactFlash

No other ones. ATA is a Microsoft compatible standard. Thus, if Windows CE and NT grow, the more CompactFlash will be the winner. The other standards need the other consumer manufacturers of D-Cams and .mp3 players to beat Win CE as a standard.

Place your bets. I have.

Craig,

Consumers will stick with the freedom of choice when it comes to electronics purchases. You can forget buying only a Sony PC or Laptop, only a Mavica, only a Sony color printer and only a Sony TV set just to insure Memory Stick compatibility. Let's be reasonable.

SanDisk's products allow end-users to select from a variety of manufacturers. I can own a Compaq PC, an IBM Think Pad, a Phillips Velo PDA, a Lexmark printer and an Epson digital camera and my CF card fits into each of these devices without any software at all.

Craig,

You took me too literally here. I was jesting about the Memory Stick fitting into a CF slot. I wanted to let you know that the design-ins are cast and Memory Stick was stuck at a toll booth on the Jersey Turnpike.

You replied...

"Ausdauer, my guess is that the memory stick was designed NOT to fit into a CF slot.
SNDK's CF scheme provides a universal hardware interface and leaves the software
interface to the manufacturer. Sony provides the software as well to provide a more
complete solution."

I think you actually have the situation reversed (or twisted).

Ausdauer

(As you well know, I lightened my SNDK position for reasons explained in great detail. Will probably by them back after panic selling related to the Memory Twig introduction.)
