Glenn, I've seen this article before and I do, find it amusing. The "Thing" that is left out is, RCA also decided to compete with IBM head on. They cloned IBM's hugely successful S360 line and significantly discounted their price. Basically selling close to cost. After 3 or 4 years. They had to close it down. At the time it was the biggest write-off ever wiped out by an American corp. A few years later GE bought what was left, but did assume the debt.

Actually, RCA's claim to fame was the commercialism, of the transistor. A little more impressive that flogging books and commodities.
