It's been said writers continue to rewrite their first novels for the rest of their lives. In youth, artists are limber, like young tree branches, and this flexibility allows their form to play in the wind without fear of breaking. Age does come though, and the accompanying stiffness that accompanies it makes us far less adventurous and experimental--instead we resort to refining and maturing the form(s) we assumed for ourselves.

In 15 years, we both will be better, more mature writers, but I doubt we'll be making forays into new unexplored creative territory. Rare is the older artist who can tap his youthful creative vigor--the playfullness, fearlessness, and abandon that create "fresh" art.

Make hay while the sun shines.
