Whether Intel? Office Depot selling "Celeron 333's" for $595? Will the average consumer pay over 1K for a home PC in the future? Is the Pentium III going to be only for office apps and high-end consumers? This low-end pressure has got to hurt margins and commiditize the chips even more, IMO. Is this gorilla on its way to becoming a King?
This is a winner, however, for softy and Cisco. Gates will still sell the OS and windows for the same price; he just gets a bigger piece of the package. It certainly expands the Internet to have all of these low priced PC's being sold, so Cisco wins. But the PC manufacturer can and will save on the chips.
