He's no more an idiot than John F. Kennedy. They both lacked substantive legislative records before a run at the White House. The same is true of Teddy, although he's been definitely a leader in expanding the government's medical system in his latter years.

My concern is that the stumbles in public might one day be during an international crisis involving nuclear weapons. Dan Qualye; he's proven that he is not qualified. He's like a musician that is very skilled on the guitar, but hits a wrong note every so often and doesn't realize it for long enough that everyone in the band and the audience loses the sense of the song. I knew a guitar player just like that. He was excellent in soloing and a great lead guitarist, but the band fired him because he would hit a wrong note and hold it and do it a few times a night; it was impossible.

<<Because he sometimes stumbled in public?>>
<<politicians are frequently over- booked and under-prepared, and
almost any of them could be made to look like an idiot on the basis of flubs.>>
Well yes but Quayle excelled at making amazing gaffes, I don't think he'd stand a chance in run for the president.

And to keep things light... I thought I'd post some fine sayings from the former mayor of Washington DC, Marion "Crackhead" Barry:

THE VERY VERY BEST OF MARION BARRY

"The contagious people of Washington have stood firm against
diversity during this long period of increment weather."

"I promise you a police car on every sidewalk."

"If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very very
low crime rate."

"First, it was not a strip bar, it was an erotic club. And second,
what can I say? I'm a night owl."

"I am clearly more popular than Reagan. I am in my third term.
Where's Reagan? Gone after two! Defeated by George Bush and
Michael Dukakis no less."

"The laws in this city are clearly racist. All laws are racist. The
law of gravity is racist."

"I am making this trip to Africa because Washington is an
international city, just like Tokyo, Nigeria or Israel. As mayor,
I am an international symbol. Can you deny that to Africa?"

"People have criticized me because my security detail is larger than
the president's. But you must ask yourself: are there more people
who want to kill me than who want to kill the president? I can assure
you there are."
