for one good example of how an erp company can use this down cycle to reposition for future growth, check psft. they are setting up so everything will be available via internet / intranet and leveraging their customer base to sell these new ecommerce / ebusiness apps. ross can do the same thing with its base which is is not insubstantial.

Dennis is a very accesible and candid person.
However, I think he has had enough time and
probably advise to do the right thing. I
personally do not see any evidence of
their being able to pull ahead. There
is however no lack of excuses about why things
are not going right.

ROSS needs to work with Sun to get an installation here in Sun's
Supply Chain Lab where most of the ERP vendors have installed theirs.
This is where Sun customers come to preview ERP solutions.

Since I can't get my hands dirty with ROSS to suggest anything
specific, but drawing from my experience with others I think the
following should be available in ROSS if not already there:

- support for thin clients: user screens should be available over
web-based technologies, especially screens widely used by mobile
users. SSL (secure connections) should also be supported. This
will definitely put forth an internet savvy image.

- reduce dependency on direct OS services: check out raw iron from
Oracle. How will ROSS fit in with Oracle with an extremely thin
OS layer?

- support for enterprise Java models to enhance cross platform
interops at reduced costs. This spawns a question for ROSS
experts: Does ROSS support Tuxedo? Please help me out here.

- processes and pricing models to support 'application service
providers'. I think this poses a big threat from the biggies
to ROSS. What if the big boys succeed in renting software instead
of selling? The ROSS cost advantages for mid tier will disappear
quickly in this case unless ROSS is also ready to make that model
work for ROSS.
