Shibumi, I wasn't so much saying that that was what they were complaining about as saying that the Rambus royalty couldn't be considered a replacement for in-house development dollars since in-house dollars would yield a competitive advantage whereas the Rambus royalties do not. The money paid to Rambus doesn't buy you an advantage, but it does keep you even with the pack (otherwise you'll be out of the game in 2 years). I suspect they're complaining because they try to cut every little cost they can think of and they probably can't do too much about this one. But I'm guessing. Dave B

Gilder's Microcosm sucks- he is an airhead of the first rank. He said that HDD heads fly at "microns" and that optical will replace magnetic storage. Well HDD heads fly at .01 microns or about 100 Angstroms and optical will never replace magnetic memory as a data technology. Thermo-magnetic assited writing or more commonly called laser assisted writing may help push past the superparamagnetic limits of the order of a few 100 Angstroms or so ultimate bit sizes but it will still be magnetic storage for all practical purposes, write with a thin film pole, read with MR, GMR,CMR. Get the picture- Gilder is but a gadfly on the wall of technology. I am sure he is great at a Harvard cocktail party. HA
