They are mostly engaged in defensive actions, not trying to take over, (Religious right)

You are not familiar with the religious right in the heartland. Perhaps the Washington spokesmen speak of tolerance and preservation of liberties. When you see them in action at the grassroot level they run stealth campaigns to gain local offices, begin banning books in the schools and libraries, increase the scope of blue-laws which prohibit just about any activity but T.V. and church on Sunday mornings, and spend the rest of their time raising zoning obstacles to Planned Parenthood offices. They not only try to take over, but they want to run your life after they do.

I overstated my position. I'm quite sure church groups dole out a lot of good deeds in this world- in an unbiased fashion. I'm not sure what implications "social conservatism" has in your way of thinking(I may have little objection?), but yes, I am certainly socially liberal and economically conservative. I hold fast to the notion that freedom works, and that it works above all else both socially and economically.

What disturbs me about religion is the element of cultish true belief
that is so common within it. This leads to very bad things- as may be evident. I'd love to preach against that true belief aspect, but since I KNOW I'm right I'd be a mite hypocritical doing it. :-)!!

The one message I'd preach would be tolerance- to live together.

"Why can't we all just get along?" --Rodney King

Perhaps because....

"Life is the first gift, love is
the second, and understanding the third." --Marge Piercy

Understanding is definitely a key achievement to strive for in this world. As per above- it may be the last thing achieved.
