The 'spin' coming out of that upside.com article is something that has been echoed by many of @Home's competitors, that being "why are consumers being forced or restricted to ATHM's content.

The question, of course, is based on a flawed premise. You can access any content out there, and begin from any site you wish.

IMO ATHM should get its PR people (they do have some don't they?) off their butts and start spinning it this way: "ATHM is offering consumers the highest speed access to the vast and ever expanding content of the world wide web. There are no limits or restrictions for ATHM users. And ATHM is providing this service for only $40 per month, just slightly more than a typical home user is currently paying, and much less than power users and businesses are currently paying for less bandwidth. In addition, and at no extra cost, ATHM has made available to users who choose it a home page portal through XCIT that will make your internet experience more enjoyable by making it easier to find what you are looking for online.

The key phrase being "at no extra cost" for the XCIT portal and content. ATHM must sell the high speed connection for the $40 and give away the content for free, if you want it. This cuts off all of the arguments from competitors at the knees. Of course you must pay extra for AOL. You have to pay for any service or product that you may order on the internet. Your ISP has nothing to do with that.

The only real argument is that cable modem access is expensive. What new technology is not.

Come on ATHM, get some PR people into action.
