Customers matter more than products.

Phoenix has made a lot of product announcements the last few years such as PlugWorks, ROMPilot, and ACPIArchitect. But, there have been fewer customer announcements and the increased R&D spending hasn't translated to the bottom line.

SecureAgent looks less speculative than some of the other products Phoenix has developed. HP is a top 5 vendor, so their endorsement is important. They give me more confidence than Intel and Microsoft, who have a spotty track record of enriching their partners. I wish ROMPilot had also been developed with a big customer.

Merced is at least a year away. If it's successful, it will be like USB and require at least 2 years before we see appreciable volumes. Or, it could be a failure like 1394 and I2O, in which case all the money will have been wasted. See the EE Times article at eet.com. It won't be a simple matter to cajole the entire software industry to rewrite traditional single-threaded code for a multi-threaded processor and it will certainly be harder than redesigning serial ports (USB) and parallel ports (1394 and Fibre Channel).
