jw, doesn't work. the instant i right click the message, it opens. i also get the drop down menu, but the mail has been opened in another pane. one reason i'd like the option of deleting without opening is that spammers take open mail as a sign to send more. plus some mail is pure bs just from looking at the subject. so, highlighting (either by right or left clicking) only serves to open the mail, jw. any more suggestions? do you have communicator 4.5 running on win95? and this is what you do to delete without opening? thanks again, mark
