me.mark, Uh Oh, I have win98, NSCP 4.5. It works for me. Try clicking on EDIT and Preferences from browser and go thru' each window looking for an option to Delete Without Opening. I'll look for it on other machine with win95, NSCP 4.5 a little later and get back to you.

Regards, /jw

mr.mark, I can delete without opening e-mail on old computer also with win95,nscp 4.5. Here's how I have it configured in Window Setting. Not sure if this is the place to make the changes.

Edit, from browser page
Preferences
Mail & NewsGroups
Window Settings

Choose which layout you prefer for messenger window. ( I have the first one dotted)

Double clicking a folder or a newsgroup opens it in a new window (Checked)

Opens newsgroups in a messenger window (Checked)

Other options not checked.

Try single click only, not double click.

Gosh, I hope one of these works, Otherwise??????

My e-mail never opens until I click on Open Message. I only get the one drop down window.

Regards, /jw

Mark. I too am running 4.5 under Win95. I get the same result on my machine as you do using the method JW suggested earlier (that I just got to). My configuration under Windows Setting is the same as JW -- BUT, I don't have all the options he refers to. My version the plain old 4.5 not 4.5a.

If all you are worrying about is return receipts, take a look at the Mail & Newsgroup | Return Receipts option under preferences. This area allows you to set up your own return receipts (when it arrives or when its opened or both), what to do with receipts you receive, and what to do when an email asks for a receipt. You can set it to NEVER provide a return receipt or, using the Customize button to set up when you will allow a receipt to be sent. The message receipt and message open receipt options work (I've used them) and the selective issuance of return receipts works (I have a friend who emails from her office that requires her to track receipt of email. Its easier to just leave it on then turn it on and off all the time).

Since you say this option is to cut down on spam. I think you really should look into the email filtering option. According to the help from my provider a VERY SIMPLISTIC filter could be set up by:

1. Open Netscape Mail and click on Edit | Mail Filters
2. Click on New
3. Name the filter
4. Select criteria you want mail filtered by. For example, if you want mail sent from a particular e-mail address filtered, select Sender.
5. Now select whether or not the messages you are trying to filter do or do not meet certain conditions. For example, if you wanted to filter e-mail that contained "user@rcn.com" you would select Contained.
6. You can add additional conditions with the More button.

You must now select what you want done with the message. For example, if you wanted the e-mail deleted, you would select Delete.

Good luck.
