I've heard that rumor here in the Valley too, even at HP.

Certainly no confirmation of it, just a rumor.

The bigger problem is who would replace him. Historically HP promotes from inside, and I don't see any clear front-runner for the job.

OTOH, the only people with the clout to really push him out would be the Hewletts and the Packards. Biggest chunk of stock is, I believe, owned by the Packard Foundation which is controlled by Dave's kids. They have probably have less interest in the "old" way of doing things than the founders did, and if they felt it's time for new blood, they could probably make it happen regardless of tradition.
