GEO Interactive Media (LSE:GIM.) Thursday announced that it will launch WebRadio.com(TM), the world's first "plug-in-free" Internet broadcasting site. Users will be able to access the site at www.webradio.com beginning in Q2 1999. Unlike other Web broadcasting sites, WebRadio.com, powered by GEO Interactive's patented Emblaze(TM) streaming media technology, is Java-based. This allows users to easily hear radio Webcasts by clicking on the site, eliminating the additional time, inconvenience, and in some cases, costs associated with downloading streaming audio plug-ins. The Georgia Institute of Technology estimates that more than 84 percent of Internet browsers are Java compatible. GEO Interactive's Emblaze technology also allows content providers to webcast streaming media through WebRadio.com without the need for costly server software, eliminating the dependency on other vendors' technology and unnecessary licensing costs. "The next wave of Internet broadcasting is WebRadio.com," said Shai Schiller, chief executive officer of GEO Interactive. "Due to our inherent advantages of owning our own enabling technology, we are well positioned to offer Internet listeners what we believe will be the most positive streaming media experience available on the Internet." Site Programming and Revenue Initially, WebRadio.com will offer live radio broadcasting feeds to Internet users worldwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In less than one month, the company has signed webcasting deals with 27 radio stations in the United States. In the future, GEO Interactive plans to offer other live and on-demand programming including music concerts, music videos, TV programs, movie trailers, promotions, and news and sports. Additionally, WebRadio.com will also allow users to see and hear their favorite disk jockeys through live, in-studio webcam broadcasts. The company will also provide turnkey webcasting services to corporations, record labels, entertainment companies and other event sponsors, allowing these organizations to broadcast special events on the Internet. WebRadio.com is free to anyone with a Java-enabled Web browser. The site's revenue will be generated from advertising sales, sponsorships, e-commerce commissions and webcasting services fees for events and corporations. Internet Broadcasting Growth Sources such as Arbitron are acknowledging the recent growth of Internet broadcasting. A recent report from Arbitron stated that 13 percent of all Americans and 27 percent of all Internet users in the United States have listened to the radio over the Internet. Arbitron also recently stated its intention to begin measuring Internet listenership of radio stations when calculating its market ranking of individual stations, making Internet broadcasting more valuable to radio stations. "Odyssey studies consistently show that consumers are frustrated by anything that slows down or complicates their experience on the Internet. The most active online users are very alert to anything that promises them a faster, better experience on the Web," said Elizabeth Atcheson, vice president, business development at Odyssey Research, a San Francisco-based market research firm. "According to Odyssey's most recently published Homefront study of households who use the Internet at home, 25 percent have installed and used RealPlayer in the last six months and 7 percent have installed and used Net Show," Atcheson added.
