Now the juiciest, most frightening part of the whole UK GM story... You asked "How on earth can the local councils ensure that the food they buy/supply to their food outlets are non-GM food if there's no labeling?" First of all, your question is important beyond just the labeling of end-product, considering crops like soy (which also turn into food ingredients) are *mixed* through all food production channels...there isn't any way to enforce such a ban without totally upsetting the food production chain (at added cost). So at face value, the ban is meaningless considering reality, but if it puts worried UK minds to rest, so be it. However, there's more to this story. The timing of this meeting and "ban" was no doubt staged by Greenpeace et al. to coincide with the Colombia conference, which was right after the Brazilian state announcement. Putting everything together...what was HOPED for by Greenpeace et al. is that a NEW trade channel of labeled product would make it from that Brazilian state (or others) to the UK. The economic effects would only become clear later...right off the bat, I wonder how UK parents would feel about a spike in food costs at school, or possibly in overall inflation due to major disruptions in trade. Further (and here is why the UK government should be concerned), you must also consider the fact that Greenpeace is highly FUNDED at this point by Organic food groups. Why is this key? ...well, these groups actively funded Greenpeace, to spread bad science in a comprehensive, campaign-like fashion...with the hopes of taking over food production channels! That is, this force inflicted media terrorism on the UK, with the hope of forcing out existing food routes, to be replaced with new routes, owned by those who contributed to the scheme! And all this by tricking the UK government and citizens. As the UK Royal Society describes it, "bad science"... Like I said before, what this amounts to is media-driven, economic and trade terrorism. The UK apparently doesn't fully understand how they have been manipulated in this way, since half of them are still struggling to understand the fact that tomatoes have genes in them at all. And the Royal Society only comments on the science part of this issue... BUT, the Colombia conference foiled the plan of Greenpeace, since GM food now cannot be banned for import, subject to WTO intervention. In fact, the ban in the UK may now be technically illegal, considering the body which made that decision is a "state" of England. Whew! This is a juicy scandal. If I were the BBC, I'd get me on the front page, don't ya think?
