Kash,

If Intel keeps pushing this thing this "flaw" is going to royally screw up the PIII introduction.

The PIII introduction is already toast. The chip offers nothing of value to most (unless you consider accelerated Shockwave driven advertisements to be valuable), it is very expensive, and it a has a serious security hole.

<They can simply let the customers decide wether they want serialized parts with ID or parts with permanently fixed numbers.>

How do you inform the customer? Label the ID-less chips as "Pentium ||| Anonymous"? "Private Pentium |||"? "Saving Private Pentium"? (Sorry, that was awful, I know.)

Unless this ID thing gets way out of control, I don't think Intel will be winning any converts by offering a separate version of the Pentium III without the ID. People who choose Intel won't care either way, and the people who do care about the ID will just choose a non-Intel processor instead.

Kash,
Intel still doesn't know what's tha' matta'. They say they have to talk to the German magazine, Heck, If I was the German magazine I'd want to be compensated for helping Intel do their job.

Then again, if Intel would just listen they would just take the whole dang' ID thing off the chip...but what they probably did is get concessions from software companies...use KNI and we will help you stopp pirating of you software.
