I am reluctant to add to the rumors with no fact, but here is my analysis anyhow.
ALA will issue annual results on March 11. It leaves 2 week end.

I came to Xylan from ALA. As an investor there, I thought that ALA should take over the company. It would make industrial sense for both. I think Xylan would complement Fast Packet Engines that was taken over by ALA last year. And ALA has announced that they will purchase 2-3 small focused companies this year. They have even issue bonds in january to finance the purchases (their stock is too low).
In term of timing, doing it next week end would be fine. All the nervousness around Xylan means that the stock could be at 30 in no time. Or another company would act before ALA does.
After the 11March, ALA chairman will go 'on tour' to convince the analysts of the strategy of the group. The reason why ALA stock has been doing badly is mainly because the direction of the group is not clear. It is seen as slow to face the new challenges. Would you want to make a major move after you have seen the analysts, or just before and take the opportunity to send your message accross much more powerfully?

I could be wrong, but I think that this week end is key for ALA. If they decided to buy Xln as I think they did, it is the best time to do it.

Good luck
