>>In short, whether it is museums, orchestras, or libraries, the NEA is,
like the public schools, about public education, and we know that
conservatives are against that too. It always comes back to the same
place: if you can afford it, you can have it <<

The discussion was about funding. You made the broadbrush statement that conservatives are against public funding. I am saying that conservatives recognize the appropriate need for public funding, but insist upon real oversight.

Using your example of poor communities and lack of quality education, if those affected were given vouchers to attend whichever school they chose, that problem would be eliminated. As it stands now, federal mandate insists that if you are poor and live in a bad school district, you are flat out of luck.

The other option you have is to do what was done here recently. The city floated a tax increase which was PASSED to fund improvements in the city schools. How in the world you think a measly 7% from the federal government is going to repair those schools is beyond me. The locals realized that they are the ones that let their schools deteriorate and that they are the ones that will have to pay to fix it.

So does that mean that if everyone can't afford it, no one should be allowed to have it?

It always comes back to the same thing: If you can afford it, you can have it. Otherwise...SOL
