Could be new periphery business via phone-to-appliance : Lucent, Oracle, C&W, Others to Cooperate on Internet Services Stockholm, March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Lucent Technologies Inc., the No. 1 phone-equipment maker, Oracle Corp., the top database software maker, Cable & Wireless Plc, the U.K.'s No. 2 phone company and others agreed to jointly create an interface for connecting consumer appliances with Internet services. The so-called Open Service Gateway specification will be designed to provide a common foundation for Internet companies, phone companies and equipment makers to allow the consolidation of voice, data and multimedia communications to and from a home. This alliance opens ''a vast new markets for Internet service and software developers,'' the companies said. ''Now, even homes without traditional desktop computers can look forward to deriving benefit from Internet connectivity.'' The alliance comes as more wireless phone users are demanding data services that hook up to corporate networks and the Internet. Nokia Oyj, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, and Microsoft Corp. predict that more wireless phones with Internet access will be sold than laptop computers next year.
