No, I don't have any suggestions, I just don't see the point.

I (for a short time) had an ISP where I could look at my POP3 mail before it hit my system. This was a nice feature, cause I could delete large mail files and spam before it was transmitted to my computer. Unfortunately, they had other problems and I dropped them.

I have seen the command codes for the POP protocol somewhere, which, I believe, that you can use with any ISP to read headers first and then edit before downloading, but I don't remember where.

If you just don't want to see the messages which have been downloaded onto your computer, who cares, just hit the delete button as they come up.

Following Steve's thoughts--what pointing device are you using? With my Logitech mouse I can set any of the the buttons for doubleclick action with only a single click, very handy most of the time but potentially frustrating if you're only trying to highlight something. My biggest problem with that happens when I'm trying to organize my favorites in IE4.

With IE4 you can also set your mouse for doubleclick action by going to Start\Settings\FolderOptions\General, at the bottom of the General tab there is a Settings button where you would find the doubleclick option. Maybe this is still left over from your IE experience?

Anyway I hope this helps.
