LindyBill, I am always thinking about shorting or buying puts on Compaq but their internet biz scared me off. You are right that it was a no brainer as Dell disappointed. I can see how it may hurt PC company profits but don't understand the effect on MSFT or Intel.
The boxmakers' revenues might drop due to competition but unit growth probably remains intact.

Hopefully we have all the tech bad news out of the way. Maybe more of these analysts should have dropped their estimates on all the PC makers---would have saved us from future downgrades.
However, I bet that Edelstone from Morgan Stanly---an Intel bull, will probably make some comments regarding Intel earnings ( after he chats with the CFO <g> ). I am betting that they will do fine, which is the indication I got from their last earnings conference call.
Of course, that would extend to MSFT as well.

Gates backs fast-track trade authority for President. (read story)

Maybe Clinton might back Gates and tell his lawyers to lay off a little.

Politics.

I am thinking about the MSFT and INTEL split announcements.

MSFT split was routine just like last year---one week after earnings announcement. However, INTEL was somewhat later than one week. I wonder if Intel was more uncertain about their future prospects than MSFT was. MSFT split signified confidence while the INTEL split signified "let's do it since MSFT is also". For sure the IBM split was a copycat move. Dell did not want a severe stock slide--so they announced a split.

Makes me feel that Microsoft is the cream of the crop in this bunch.
Hope that Intel is not far behind MSFT.
My feeling is that that both of these will do much better than most of the box makers.--Dell and Gateway might surprise us though.

Dell split March 5 (i think)--should add some life to the tech sector.
