I would not be surprised to learn that the current PC slowdown was caused by the Pentium III launch.
I believe some high end PC buyers delayed their purchases due to the release of the new PIII. This might have been a big part of the current slowdown.
The bright side is that the PIII is out. Now sales should pick up in a big way. Just waiting to hear how successfull the PIII was for PC companies in their sales----should boost the sales for the high end box makers like Dell.

I remember that Windows98 launch made it difficult for the box makers before the launch date. I think the same applies here as long as Intel can get consumers over the privacy issues. I think Intel can handle that. Not worried about AMD in expensive computers since a buyer of such PCs won't take the chance with AMD---no matter how good it is. AMD will be left with the sub 1000 market or even lower.

Paul:

Re: The Compaq sales "warning/leak" is the second. Remember what happened in Q1 last year with Compaq's GLUT OF UNSOLD PCs that they had built in Q497/Q198?

Do you have any opinion as to whether CPQ's "warning/leak" is due to unsold PCs or simply price competition.

Thanks, Adam
