It appears to me that INTC is going lower considering that AMD news was released after the close on Friday. Perhaps some people knew about this earlier.

James,

<"Intel Inside" means nothing to them.>

This is certainly true of a certain percentage of people. Some people will always buy based primarily on price. Some will also assume that the OEM name validates the CPU. The question is, how much longer do you think AMD can afford to price 25% below Intel. Intel has vowed to take the price actions necessary to regain share at the low end. All else equal, do you think a customer looking at two Compaq's will favor the one with Intel Inside.....I do.

Of course, this discussion only applies to the retail market which is a small percentage of the overall PC opportunity.

In the corporate world there are other considerations. You can rest assured that "Intel Inside" carries significantly more weight in I/T departments.

James - Re: "Most of todays retail buyers are primarily interested in getting on the Internet and you don't need a P-II or P-III to do that. Serious gamers will definitely buy the P-III. "

Why ?

A Pentium II system is pretty cheap and Celeron systems are even cheaper.

Don't forget, this "segment" is still 20% or less of the total market.

Two years ago all the AMDroids told us nobody needs anything faster than a 233 MHz K6.

AMD DROPPED the 233 MHz K6 a year ago - no customers !

Pretty soon these same turkeys will tell us that a 400 MHz K63 is all that anybody will ever need.

Rule of thumb - AMD's top speed (you fill in the blank)____MHz processor is ALL THAT ANYBODY EVER NEEDS.

Yet AMD keeps trying to make faster processors.

Ever asked yourself why?

Paul

Those nuts would buy a super-computer if they could afford it.

They already are...

Buy a supercomputer if they could afford it? And now they can paste together several thousand old P-2 chips and beat almost any body. Search under supercomputer ....
