Hi CGB,
EVen though you and I have talked 50 by PM, I'll go on record here saying I thought turning half a century was terrible, but then I got through it and realized it was all in my head, that I was still able to dress and feed myself, and even on occasion say something fairly intelligent, as long as expectations weren't too high. Then I read Jim's description and realized that I should have been put out of my misery the day before my fiftieth. My god. I had no idea I looked and felt so bad!
It's a good thing we have Jim to make us face reality.
.
Of course one of the real benefits about turning fifty and menopause is that you realize that men aren't particularly necessary anymore. You are capable of happiness and fulfillment without them. Maybe to the young women of today, that is a given, but for a Southern Belle type of the 60's, it is a mind-boggling and awesome revelation. I no longer feel that I have to fulfill some feminine fantasy image for a male, stroke their egos, tell them they are the most wonderful thing since sliced bread, and I am much more comfortable with their disapproval or even their ignoring of me, poor pruny, warty, hairy, constipated crone that I am. THere is great freedom in this.
So I guess 50 is a mixed bag, but I really like a lot of the stuff I'm discovering about myself.
Besides, between you and me, I don't think I look THAT bad. Thank God for Hassan, my hairdresser, and Oil of Olay.
