Matthew I guess I am a little biased since I traded a lot of options through ETrade, When they work they worked great. Now the problem happens when they didnt work so good, Lost my shirt and pants and it was darn hard to get out of a position when the market is very volatile. So I did great for an year and 1 week wiped me out. I do agree there is much less risk with options than with stocks if you play it carefully. But when you have spiders why take the chance on getting burned. Unless of course you want to take a position in a single company with better prospects than the rest. I still havent seen too many people who havent been burned by options sooner or later.
