Just a comment on the confusing DTE (PC to modem) / DCE (modem to modem) speed discrepancy you pointed out. Since the modem will be doing v.42bis compression of data, it is important that the DTE speed be set faster than the modem's rated bps speed. I have seen users set the maximum speed setting in the modem setup menu to 57,600 because they thought that meant their modem speed (as in 56K) effectively turning off compression. 115,200 is pretty much the maximum stable serial port speed on most systems without using special serial cards with high-speed chipsets. So, everyone using a modem should make sure the maximum speed setting in the general tab of the modem setup menu is at least 115,200.
