Duke of URL and all: 2/27 Bloomberg News: "Siemens to buy closely held Argon for $240 Mln." Argon is developing a so called gigabit switch router, which sends data traffic over phone networks faster than existing gear made by No 1 networking company CISCO Systems Inc. and others!

As all of us know...3com and Siemens are in an alliance to supply voice, video, and data. This is very good news for 3com stockholders and it now appears that Siemens along with others intend to challenge Cisco! What say you...."Mr. Finder & Co."? No more "puppy chow" for 3com...."Science Diet"!

Formal announcement about purchase of Argon should come in a couple of weeks! As I have been saying these past two months...accumulate....accumulate!

Best to all,

HK

3Com's New High-Performance Modem Connects Small Business Users;
OfficeConnect 56K Business Modem Provides Exceptional Features
BW - 06:07 a.m. Mar 01, 1999 Eastern

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 1999--Continuing its strong
heritage of manufacturing world-class modems, 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS)
today began shipping its newest offering, the OfficeConnect(R) 56K(a) business
modem.

This V.90 analog modem combines essential business features and value in a
high-performance package.

Designed for small-business users from the ground up, 3Com's OfficeConnect 56K
business modem includes a host of value-added features not commonly found in this
product category, such as an extensive software bundle, enhanced V.42 bis data
compression technology, security and configuration tools, and a lifetime limited
warranty.

"3Com's OfficeConnect 56K modem provides small-to-medium business users a truly
sophisticated communication tool," said Daryle Brown, 3Com product marketing
manager. "Finally, users can choose a business-class modem that integrates exceptional
business tools, ease-of-use and value in a high-quality, high-performance product."

New ControlCenter Software

3Com's OfficeConnect 56K modem includes the new ControlCenter, an elegant
graphic interface for "point-and-click" access to numerous modem features, including
security settings, connection diagnostics and driver updates.

In designing the OfficeConnect 56K business modem, 3Com focused on delivering
these key business modem capabilities without complex setup or maintenance. For
example, to eliminate time-consuming web searches for the latest modem firmware
releases, ControlCenter contains an Auto Update feature.

Through Auto Update, 3Com automatically notifies registered users of new code
releases whenever they're connected to the Internet and provides the ability for
one-button updates. This simple upgrade process not only saves business users
valuable time, but also guarantees that the OfficeConnect 56K modem is consistently
up-to-date.

In addition, the OfficeConnect 56K business modem's Remote Configuration feature --
accessible via the ControlCenter -- makes it easier for users to support out-of-office
personnel, such as sales staff or telecommuters.

Also through the ControlCenter, users can access the modem's Dial Back and Link
Security features. When the Carrier Loss Redial feature is activated, should the line be
dropped for any reason, the modem will automatically redial the last number called.

Furthermore, the Dial Back option gives users the ability to enable a login and
password measure to prevent unauthorized access. With Link Security, users can
activate a coded security string exchange that occurs during modem handshaking,
making both computer systems more hacker-resistant.

More Reliable Performance

As with all 3Com(R) V.90 modems, the new OfficeConnect 56K business modem is
dedicated to providing the best connections possible. Compatible with U.S.
Robotics(R) x2(TM) technology, the OfficeConnect 56K modem takes advantage of
3Com's exclusive adaptive speed leveling, which allows for superior connections and
top speeds -- even over poor phone line conditions.

And while Universal Serial Bus (USB) is still not fully implemented in Windows 98,
the 3Com OfficeConnect 56K business modem includes all the hardware to take
advantage of this speed potential, with a simple firmware upgrade. So when the time
comes, OfficeConnect modem users can move to the USB standard without buying a
new modem.

Available now, the OfficeConnect 56K business modem has an estimated street price of
$199. Additionally, the modem has a lifetime limited warranty covering parts and
labor.
