Steven, dear, it is not necessary to be rude and hostile to make the point. Ignoring works just dandy.

I am frequently bemused by the behavior of people who feel compelled to preach. I don't think that it really has anything to do with religion or God at all. Therefore, I ignore it as I ignore the ranting of any demagogue.

My only concern is with demagogues who manage to draw a following.

The most truly devout people I know rarely talk about religion. They live their beliefs rather than shout them.

About food preferences ---

One of the important roles of starch in the diet is that the customary starch of a person unavoidably classifies him into a class. Examples:

Long-grain rice -- aristocrats and former in place slaves
Sticky rice -- Japanese and Upland Thais
Corn meal -- poor Indios, hillbillies
Grits -- sand lappers, rednecks
White flour -- Northern Europeans
Durum wheat flour -- Italians and epastaparians.
Rye flour -- Eastern europeans
Oats -- horses (in England) and Scots

etc.

While grits is (are?) my favorite comestible, I almost uniformly find that I deplore the political opinions of people who prefer grits and like the politics of oats (especially the horsies). .
