To think someday we will all trade this way!

The never ending sage of frustration in dealing with Etrade.

When we left off last week Etrade was still unable to find a check for $35,000.00 which First Union National Bank said Etrade had cashed February 11th of 1999 the year befor the Year 2000 crisis.

As we left off Etrade called back on Friday afternoon saying that all the information they had required was useless in their seach for the $35,000.00 and they would need a copy of both sides of the actual check. First thing Monday morning I called First Union Bank and after playing telephone keeno contacted a customer rep of First Union National Bank. I explained the problem of the lost $35,000.00 check and asked if I could have them fax Etrade a copy of the cancelled check. The rep replied yes but it would take up 3 to 5 business days. Since I did not have many options I told the rep to go ahead and fax Etrade, and provided First Union with Etrades fax number. Then the rep asked if Etrades fax number was on 24 hrs a day. I said that I did not know. The rep replied that if the fax was not on 24 hours a day and First Union could not get through they would mail the copy of the check. Again I did not have any other option. I knew I was not going to get a fax sent to Etrade. On wednesday I called First Union National bank customers service to get an update on the check. After playing a few more rounds of telephone keeno I again reached a customer rep. When I told him I was calling to find out if a copy of my check had as yet been faxed to Etrade. He replied all he was capable of was telling me that there was a record of my request from Monday but that was it. Well what could I do? So I waited till Friday. Now it was the fifth business day. After another round of telephone keeno I was able to talk to another First Union Rep and was told that the only information they had was that the request was made Monday and nothing had been done as yet and sometimes these things take longer than 5 business days. Despite my hardest efforts I could feel my blood pressure rising. That afternoon I was at the bank so I stopped by the information counter to see if I could get some help in getting this matter resolved. The woman who was at the counter was on the phone and during her conversation with some other customer asked how she could help me. As she juggled the conversations between me and the customer on the phone she told me the only thing she could do was phone the same customer service number that I had called previous that day. After the conversation with the customer on the phone ended she called the customer service and found out that on Wednesday they had tried to fax the copy of the check to Etrade was busy. Seems they tried three times and Etrade's fax number was busy all three times. Since it was their policy to only attempt to fax a copy three times and that that was unsuccessful First Union National Bank was now going to mail me the copy of the check. She told me I should receive the copy by next Wednesday. Oh Yeah! I forgot, but Etrade's rep Alan Stewart called me just before I called First Union and asked me to once again provide him with the check number, the date the check was mailed, the ABA number on the cancelled check, and the address of the Etrade office the check was mailed to. It was a request of all the information that I had provided four different Etrade Reps the week earlier. I told him I had provide Etrade with all this information four times before to four different customer reps including him and Etrade was still unable to find the $35,000.00. I also told him that I had moved in to a different phase and was having First Union National Bank fax Etrade a copy of the cashed check.

Another week and I am no closer to having this problem solved than I was a month ago. All I found out this week is First Union National Bank does not seem to be run much better than Etrade. Oh well, if only I get this resolved before the Y2k crisis hits because it is said that Y2K is going to cripple U.S. businesses.
