Mainframes have many levels of redundancy built into the hardware and especially the operating system which have yet to be duplicated by PC based servers and especially Windows NT. On the other hand, try getting a mainframe upgrade to handle something like a %500 increase in traffic installed in 48 hours as I seem to remember reading that Dell had done for some large stock market entity recently. Eventually PC software will catch up with mainframe software in the continuous operation department. I suspect the real problem is the antiquated application software most if not all brokerages are using, based on the days of relatively low volume paper trading. For now they are just throwing very expensive hardware at the problem.
