Putting a microprocessor inside the cable chip is a smart move because software is more versatile and enables the changing of functions much faster than changing hardware. Do you know how much time and effort it takes to change hardware in a chip?

I guess I would disagree to some extent that changing hardware in any box is all that difficult - really, upgrading a CPU to an Overdrive processor is a piece of cake. Why not just upgrade the chip?

If the box is internal, it is more of a pain to get to, but, downloading software to update a chip is also time consuming. Of course, that's why we need the bandwidth in the first place.

I have always hated the upgrade cycle for modems. Seems like I was always cracking open my wallet for a new modem every six months. But in the scheme of things, I was always satisfied by doing so.

Conexant is making noise without any real products or revenues in this category. I am not dismissing them as a very real competitor, but, I have to agree that Broadcom has a big lead over them in the marketplace and will probably be able to dictate the standards.

Are you implying that CSCO has partnered with CNXT? Wasn't clear, but, even though CSCO is allied with BRCM, it would still make sense. I thought COMS was allied with BRCM too?
