victor -
I was interested to see that this info was passed by Enrico Pesatori and not EP or Mason. Pesatori has a reputation as a no-nonsense hard line fiscal manager - he is the one who turned Tandem around in 90 days after 13 losing quarters, and he did it by careful attention to numbers and elimination of wishful thinking. I believe this is part of CPQ's efforts to regain credibility on the street by providing early and accurate information on what's happening.

Since I believe that CPQ was planning to beat the numbers in 1Q, a few cents down would still leave them over consensus. Also, the next earnings announcement will fall right in the middle of their Innovate conference, a once-every-2-years event where most of CPQ's senior management shows up in Houston to meet with top customers and partners. They will surely need to manage to an upbeat position for that conference. If they thought that they would do mid-30's, but the consensus was at or above that number, a little negative guidance would be prudent.
