>>Linux is more of a server OS, there is NO WAY that Linux will replace windows on the home PC.<<

Richie,
With all due respect and at the risk of getting off topic I wouldn't say "no way" that Linux would/could someday replace Windows on the home PC. I will concede that it is more of a server OS and not quite ready for mainstream just yet though.

Two years ago I began playing with Linux and gave it up in frustration. 3 months ago I thought I'd give it another try and was absoultly amazed at how far it has come. The new RedHat 5.2 version was as easy to install as any flavor of Windows and with the new Gnome GUI Linux is also as easy to use as any flavor of Windows. Combine this with the fact that Linux now has the support of Big Blue and that companies like Corel are supporting Linux with major apps for FREE no less (not to mention StarOffice which is also FREE and as capable as MS Office) and Linux could VERY WELL compete with anything Bill & Company has. IMHO, were going to be hearing a LOT more about Linux in the comming years. And best of all, Gates can't own it or buy it!

I think ahhaha makes a very good point and observation. I also agree with him concerning portals. I personally perfer to set Netscape to open to a blank page rather than have content shoved down my thoat by some portal. This was also the reason I quit AOL.

Just my 2 cents

Therefore, the OS on the machine they buy is irrelevant so long
as it provides the desktop appearance substantially similar to
that of their friends.

If there was a bang-up browser, and Word and Excel compatible
editors, then what the heck does the average consumer care about
what's underneath?

Microsoft PnP is highly overrated. Linux could achieve substantially the same result with a fairly short document spec'ing hardware constraints of add-ons and a relatively simple install wizard.

This stuff will come.

The Linux slams I heard are exactly the same as the NT slams 5 years ago.

Linux is actually maturing faster than NT did, I would wager.
