El, When did the meeting with investors and some analysts visiting Compaq become a warning? Aren't warnings announced to the general public and not just analysts?
NW
COMPAQ COMPUTER warned of lower-than-expected demand for its
personal computers, compounding concerns by some analysts that
growth in the $174 bln world-wide PC market may be nearing an end.
The world's largest PC maker said sales for the quarter ending
March 31 were running below its projections because of weakness in
North America and Europe, which accounts for the bulk of PC sales.
"In January, our sales were lower than we expected and it spilled
over into the first week of February," said Enrico Pesatori,
Compaq's senior vice president for corporate marketing. "We can't
pinpoint it to anything special," he said. (Dow Jones)

Salomon Smith Barney said it cut its estimate of COMPAQ COMPUTER's 1Q earnings, but kept its buy rating and $65 target price. Cut 1Q EPS to $0.30 from $0.34. Noted that the value of Compaq's operating assets in Brazil dropped by $100 mln since January as a result of the 40% devaluation of Brazil's Real. "(This drop) is entirely responsible for the reduction in our earnings estimate," Salomon analyst Richard Gardner said in a note. Noted that Compaq has said its January sales were slightly below expectations in North America and European mid-size business PC market, but that orders have picked up late in February.
