John,

The Toshiba's are a great deal as you say-particularly the 14.1 display option.

on the UK register it also talks about the K-3 mobile coming next quarter (with a 2.4V supply). That means that you will be able to buy 350/366 K-3's in a few months.

As these parts will be desktop speed bin failures they should be priced in the $150-200 range for the CPU. The power consumption will still be pretty high at 2.4V or probably 2x the Intel 366 Dixons.

Still for a lot of users it will still be a compelling solution.

The one item that surprises me is that cheap Celeron notebooks are not out and plentifull. A 300 Celeron mobile chip was announced in January. It should be a great chip for the hi-battery life user.

Regards,

Kash

Well if Toshiba wants to subsidize the sale of AMD processors over those of Intel, they can go ahead and lose money too. There's no way that the intel chip by itself (including motherboard differences) is $800 more than the AMD chipset/motherboard. Not even counting the increased display size!

We seem to be in one of those periodic "Pile on to Intel" periods. I remember that the last one drove intel down to ~$65, and it was quite profitable to have picked up calls and stock at those levels. Waiting to see how far down the "experts" can drive INTC down this time, for another good profit opportunity! -JB

<My only comment is that on the surface at least, the AMD equipped laptop looks to be a great deal, I've never seen a laptop with a 14.1" TFT screen for $1899. It will be $800 less than an Intel equipped laptop with a smaller screen...>

An $800 difference between the AMD and the Intel model, even when the Intel model has a smaller screen? My god, Intel's mobile Pentium II processor doesn't even cost $800! And even if it did, that must mean that AMD's mobile K6-2 is being given away for free.

I think Toshiba is trying to make a false comparison between AMD and Intel in order to sell more AMD-based laptops. Either that, or Toshiba is trying to cash in on the Intel brand name.
