And that piece of the culture is one of the things that the new CEO is going to simply have to change. Period.

The belief that we can continue to pay substandard wages, and that people will continue to want to work here just for the privelege of being employed by HP is outdated and irrelevant. In Silicon Valley the average term of employment is 18 months. Institutional loyalty outside of HP old-timers is mostly dead. You get what you pay for. HP will just have to get used to it.

(Corrolary to this. You get paid what you're worth. IOW, no lifetime employment and endless tolerance for deadwood or change-resistant individuals who want to keep believing the world never changes. HP will have to get used to this fact of life too. Most US companies have known this for years. Even the Japanese know it. Now HP gets to catch up with reality.)
